Flash as a sideabar

I was planning on using Flash to create an animated sidebar of my website. One of my friends had said that that is a poor idea because that is looked down upon. What are your thoughts on this, and what alternatives are there to Flash?

I think, flash would not be a poor idea when it comes to use it on websites.. as well as side bar, it is all depends on how the flash being created,, more on, you can tweak flash, with different effects, such as roll over effects. all i can say is that it would realy depends on the flash and setting you want to set unto.

I dont think it is a good idea as the flash may eat a lot of your bandwidth and slow down the load of your website

Anyone have idea about how to give effect in flash? Yet I am not using flash but interested to learn flash.

When I was using the services of towerwebsites.com, I was employing the flash feature into service. It worked well for me. It in fact decorated my website.
