i think hostgator and godaddy may be good but they don't provide asp.net hosting and then a lot of sites need asp.net hosting. as far as i know they don't provide asp.net, but if they do check and tell me. if they don't, this is a major drawback.

godaddy provides asp.net hosting, hostgator dont.

as per my knowledge hostgator has bought servers from another hosting, and they manage servers remotely.

If you want to set up your own server then, you need to have lots of knowledge about server handling, database, networking and so on.... and it would be costly too.
however you can try installing linux on your computer and start experimenting.

I think hostgator is the best when it comes to dedicated servers. Of course Lunarpages and Justhost too are not lagging behind too far.

There are so many good dedicated server providers than hostgator and godaddy. Godaddy servers are located in Hong Kong and their uptime is really weak. The best dedicated server provider is Softlayer (Dedicated Server Hosting, Cloud Servers, & Managed Hosting Plans), NetDepot (Virtual Private Data Center - Dedicated Server Hosting - Cloud Server Hosting - Atlanta Hosting - Dallas Hosting) and HIVELOCITY is also better.

Starting your own web hosting service is not easy as you think. First of all you will have to get a proper knowledge about server administration and networks. And web hosting service providing can not be done by one person. You will have to get technical operators too. And you also have to think of the monthly cost of you and how much do you have to invest. Normally a basic server costs about $80/monthly and you will also have to buy license for control panels (If you are gonna provide Linux hosting, you can buy cPanel license for $25/monthly, Windows server license and Plesk panel license cost you more than it). So I suggest you to start your busniness from a reseller package and earn some money to invest to start your own web hosting servers. (Check lkwebhosting.com).

    Good luck bro!
