Those are good steps to considering a keywords. One thing I'll like to add and that is how to check for competition. There are many free tools which help to check which keywords have more competition and traffic. Most preferred tool for selecting keywords is google adword keywords tool.
Keyword research is the most important in SEO. The key word is difficult for me. Sometime confused what is the best tool for keyword search is the time required. It's free and useful to determine the keyword.

First find your competitor website and check their On page coding and then you stuff your keywords for your domain using Google keyword tool and it have to be in seo friendly and cache too.
