Indeed is effective, but the most important SEO tool is QUALITY content, if you have this and if you follow some basic steps in SEO, Google will love you and you're gonna get traffic.

When you go to a new forum that is similar to your niche, it's important to first establish yourself as a helpful expert on the site, even before you add a signature file. Just be sure all your comment posts are 'signature enabled' so that you can go back later (maybe after your 20th post) and add a signature. That way, all your previous hard work won't have gone to waste.
