I would prefer myBB or SMF for free software, as they seem to have the better security handling for forum softwares compared to PHPBB, Invison free licenses are hard to get though, we can only use free hosting from another provider to host ours, not a private platform

yes there are lot of free forum softwares, but my favorite one is phpbb where you will get the complete support from their forums to install and we will get many plugins to install to make our forum looks good and also protect from spammers..

If you need a forum to your WP blog simplepressforum is the best free forum plugin.

for me IMO & VBulletin makes a good deal for the need of forum softwares. but recently phpbb is making good marks with its extra-ordinary plugins & extra features.

Thanks for sharing these free softwares. But i will prefer only MyBB in it because we can trust on it. I haven't heard about it any other. So, I can't trust on it. But MYBB is the best and I will make the forum with that only. I hope that you will shortly give more free forum making softwares.
definitely phpmybb is the best free forum that has lots of advanced feature. however if you are new or dont have much knowledge about internet applications, i will suggest simple machine forum (SMF) for its clean look and really easy to manage.
you can also find lots of free forum with a sub domain name that is also easy to use.
