Keywords are used normally to identify the article with the help of the search engine. The inclusion of apt keywords will enable the searcher to find out the article from the large domain of the web.

I think the main keyword should reside in meta tag.
This will help in getting visits for the article.
The article should contain the keyword which you put in meta tag, otherwise there will be no use of inserting keyword in meta tag.

Basicly the more key words you have the better - but mind you, you should aim (and research before hand) key words that are accurate to the niche you're trying to aim at. Also, as mentioned before, the key word entry in meta is vital, hence if your articles will be spiked with keywords, yet the meta will be empty - you won't profit from that.
