Spyware is malware that silently sits on a machine spying on the owner's habits and, worse, confidential information, such as passwords, Social Security Numbers, and credit card and bank account numbers, then sends the information back to its master.

Spyware tends to be less obtrusive, since its goal is to track your computer use and personal information, reporting back to the author.
Antivirus and antispyware programs work pretty much in the same way, the difference being the type of malicious file and pattern the program scans your hard drive (including the system registry) for and detects.

    Spyware - Prevents snoopers.
    Antivirus - Prevents malicious activity.

That's a summary for you anyway. Each can be branched out into several other categories.

Another difference. Virus are easy to remove but Spywares are very hard to remove.

Adware is a form of malware that advertises web sites. It can infect a browser so badly that it's useless.
Anti-spyware I think searches for registry keys, 3rd party cookies, and other tracking devices.
