Blogging is just a cool thing to do. It is completely exciting. Of course linking is not always the best option, but can be truely effective.

Yes, very important if you like your blog to known to readers. But try to make a backlinks that are realted to your topic/s. It creates good backlinks and built a foundation in preparing to increase pagerank.

Of course, it's better to follow a few select blogs that receive massive traffic and comment on those, rather than commenting on hundreds of lesser trafficked blogs. The heavily trafficked blogs are a better place to post your comment/blog link cause they will be seen by more visitors. Of course, you always want to be sure to stick with your own field. For instance, if you have a SEO blog, you can safely comment on other SEO/Webmaster/Moneymaking blogs, but commenting on a parenting blog might not produce good results. Or, vice versa.

There are several blogs I visit to gather knowledge. If I do not express my appreciation and thanks through comments I am failing on my duties. So I do.

I do, only when the post is so fancy and it caught my interest.
I often comment on blogs thast answered my queries and my needs especially if it is wordpress related.

Blogs with massive traffic rarely respond to your comments. You can do so for the sake of commenting. But SEO/Webmaster/Moneymaking blogs are exceptions, they need only a trace of your interest, they surely would chase you. It is their job. Sometimes you derive help too.
