Wordpress Plugins

I having a hard time figuring out how to install a wordpress plugin into my blog.

I'm hosting my blog myself with 1and1 hosting and using a subdomain.

I can't find the plugins directory when I use ftp to upload the plugin.

I have read elsewhere that the software is easy to install. Plugins should also be an easy task to accomplish. I have not used wordpress before but have used blogger briefly.

Just go to your admin control -> plugins -> add new -> upload -> then install and activate the plugins.

So what wordpress plugins do you guys use?
